From local badminton clubs to the Olympics, badminton courts are found all throughout the world. And if you’re like many fans and players, you might wonder: What exactly are the dimensions of a badminton court?

Whether you’re curious about badminton court sizing or are looking to put together a setup of your own, we’ve got you covered. Below, find a complete guide on badminton court sizing and dimensions — including the length, width, net size, and everything else you need to know.

Dimensions of a Badminton Court: The Basics

The total length of a badminton court is 13.4 meters (44 ft), while the width is 6.1 meters (20 ft). This means the total area is about 81.74 m2 (or about 880 ft2). Doubles games will use the full width of the court (6.1 m), while singles games have a slightly shorter width of 5.18 m (17 ft), marked by the singles sidelines.

The length of each service court is about 3.88 meters (12.7 ft), while the width is 2.53 meters, or about 8.3 ft.

Beyond that, the marking lines are about 40 mm wide. (Pro tip: These lines form parts of the areas they define — which is why shuttles are still technically “in” when they land on a line.)

The court is divided in half by the net, with each side being about 6.7 meters (22 ft) long. The court’s total diagonal length should be about 14.72 meters (48.3 ft).

If you’re setting up a court of your own, be sure to keep six feet or so of free space around the boundary lines. This way, players will have plenty of room to jump, dive, and swing their rackets close to the edge.

What About the Ceiling Height?

For casual play, there are no official rules on ceiling height — you’ll just want to make sure you have ample room for high clears and lifts. In most cases, 7.5 m (24 ft) or more will be enough. On the other hand, major international tournaments — like the Olympics and BWF World Tour — must have at least 12 m (39 ft) between the court floor and the ceiling.

Boundaries and Sidelines

Here’s what you should know about each of the lines that mark the court:

  • Back boundary line: This is the furthest line back on each side of the court. It marks the back boundary for both singles and doubles games.
  • Long service line: For singles, the long service line is the same as the back boundary line. The doubles long service line, on the other hand, is closer to the middle — about 720 mm (2.36 ft) away.
  • Short service line: The short service line is 1.98 m (6.5 ft) from the net.
  • Doubles sideline: The doubles sideline is the outermost boundary widthwise.
  • Singles sideline: Parallel to the doubles sideline is the singles sideline, which is about 420 mm (1.36 ft) closer to the center.

Badminton Net Dimensions

So, what are the official badminton net dimensions? According to the Badminton World Federation, a proper badminton net should be:

  • At least 760 mm (2.5 ft) deep
  • 1.524m (5 ft) above the ground in the center
  • At least 6.1 meters (17 ft) wide
  • 1.55m (5.1 ft) off the ground at the sidelines

Additionally, the posts attached to the net must be 1.55 meters tall.

The Takeaway

Whether you’re preparing to set up a home court or are curious about badminton court sizing and dimensions, we hope the guide above has helped you find some insight. And if you’ve got any unanswered questions, it may also help to check out the official BWF rulebook.
