(1st UPDATE) As of 12:29 am, the water level in Marikina River reaches 18 meters
MANILA, Philippines – The Marikina River reached third alarm at 12:29 am Monday, September 26, after its water level breached 18 meters due to Super Typhoon Karding (Noru).
The Marikina City Public Information Office (PIO) posted about the river’s third alarm status at 12:34 am Monday. All 8 gates of the Manggahan Floodway are open.
A third alarm is the highest in the system of warnings, and would entail forced evacuation. At past midnight on Monday, the Marikina PIO said evacuations were already underway for residents affected by the super typhoon, with at least 50 evacuation sites open to receive evacuees.
The city government first placed the Marikina River under first alarm at 8:59 pm Sunday, September 25, when its water level reached 15 meters. It reached second alarm (16 meters) just over an hour later at 10:08 pm.
As of 9:25 pm Sunday, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council reported that 8,391 people (2,293 families) have been preemptively evacuated in Metro Manila, Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, and Bicol Region.
Karding was downgraded to a typhoon after its first landfall in Burdeos, Quezon, at 5:30 pm. By the time it made its second landfall in Dingalan, Aurora, at 8:20 pm, it had already been downgraded.
