Strange as it may seem for a business best known for its presence in golf and the hyper-accurate ball tracking systems it makes, the company that became FlightScope initially operated in the defense industry, using radar technology to measure ballistics in an effort to improve the accuracy of gun systems. When it made its first move into sports, in 1995, it was to measure the speed of balls bowled in cricket.
Golf did not start to come into the picture until 2000, when FlightScope founder and CEO Henri Johnson began developing a tracking system for that sport. Four years later, the company was exhibiting at the PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando, Florida, having produced what Johnson describes as the first 3D Doppler radar system in golf.
