The warm season is right around the corner in many parts of the world. And if you’re a badminton player — or plan to be — there’s no better time to gear up and invest in a brand-new badminton net setup for the summer.

There are nearly endless backyard badminton sets to choose from, all with unique features, sizing, and materials. The good news is that most of them follow the same sequence when it comes to setup. And as long as you know a few basic steps, you can have your net up and ready to use in 30 minutes or less.

Keep reading to find a step-by-step guide on how to set up a badminton net, from court sizing to assembling the base and more.

How to Set Up a Badminton Net: Step-by-Step

Here’s how to set up a badminton net, broken down into three easy steps:

1. Choose a Location and Mark the Boundaries

Every badminton net setup may have slightly different dimensions. However, the official dimensions of a badminton court are 20 ft (6.1 m) by 44 ft (13.4 m). So, you’ll want to find an open area around that size if possible.

From there, you can mark your court boundaries using chalk, tape, or anything else that works with the surface that you’re playing on. Of course, you can skip this step if you’re just planning on casual backyard badminton — but it’s always an option if you want to play the official way.

2. Set Up the Base

Many portable badminton nets have a free-standing base that attaches from the center below the net (like this one by FBSPORT). These are typically smaller than a standard-sized net, but they offer an extremely easy assembly. To set this kind up, you’d simply:

  • Snap a pole to each side of the base.
  • Extend each pole fully outward.

Other backyard badminton sets have multiple poles that snap together, and they may or may not attach to stakes in the ground. To assemble these, simply snap each section of the posts together so that they’re standing upright at full height.

Note: If your net setup inserts directly into the ground, attach the mesh after you finish installing the first post. Then, you can use the loose end of the net as a guide to figure out exactly where you want the other post to go.

3. Attach the Net to the Poles

Once you’ve assembled your posts, you’re ready to start attaching the net itself.

Some nets have pockets that slip over the poles, while others have simple loops or eye bolts that attach to the top and bottom of the mesh.

This step can vary depending on the type of net you have, so be sure to check your set’s instructions for more specific directions. In the meantime, this video tutorial from Badminton Warehouse can also help you understand how it all fits together:

Enjoy Your New Badminton Setup!

And there you have it! You now know how to put together a backyard badminton set in a few easy steps. While not every badminton net will be exactly the same, the steps are generally similar no matter which one you decide to gear up with. As a recap, simply:

  • Start by choosing and marking out your court area.
  • Assemble your free-standing net base (or insert your posts into the ground if necessary).
  • Extend the posts outward/snap on any additional pieces.
  • Attach the mesh to the posts. Then, grab a couple of rackets, a partner, and a birdie, and you’re ready to jump into a match!
